Johnny Humes (he/they)

Born in rural Lancashire, Johnny studied at Manchester School of Art until 2018.

​

In his current series, "Such Camp!", Johnny uses drag and portraiture to tell the stories of historical queer identity.

By researching historic court documents and queer literature, Johnny portrays the evolution of LGBTQ+ subcultures and the timeline of our visibility, filling a blank space in art history and portraiture painting where queer lives have not been represented. By combining contemporary practices with classical inspirations, Johnny marries past and present with glamour.
